Up early studying for my Urbanization midterm…

watching a video from 2003 about Russia’s transition to a capitalist system.

President Vladimir Putin told the oligarchs they could keep the wealth they had acquired provided they stay out of politics.

Fuck. That sent chills up my spine.

Just heard Senator Brown speak on US-Russian relations.

Pretty smart blue-blood dude. But he is on the Veterans Affairs Committee so I’m a fan. And he knows Russian realpolitik pretty hardcore.

Tomorrow marks the 10th anniversary of the Kursk disaster. When I joined the Navy I was it had only happened a year prior. Given some of my fellow sailors in school and ultimately at work had been submariners they spoke of the dangers and risk that was taken. Even after the Cold War was “over”. The Kursk disaster was a huge tragedy for its sailors and the country. The initial refusal of Western help to its cover-up and ultimately the many unanswered questions for the family of the dead sailors.

“It’s dark here to write, but I’ll try by feel. It seems like there are no chances, 10-20%. … Regards to everybody, no need to be desperate.
- Lieutenant Dmitri Kolesnikov, Ranking Officer’s last recorded note from the K-141 Kursk

If you’re interested in submarines and the Cold War, please check out, “Blind Man’s Bluff: The Untold Story of American Submarine Espionage” by Sherry Sontag. It reads like a Tom Clancy novel but is fact, not fiction.
